In the life as a human we commit many sins and to get free from those sins committed by us the puja of Mahadev is one the most important step towards it. It is believed that Lord Ram after the war of Ramayan and after killing Rawan installed a Parthiv Shiv ling made up of mud and sand to get free from the sins. It is believed that doing this puja devotees have been gifted with the Liberation from the cycle of Life and Death. That is why when Lord Shiva prayed in the form of a Linga which is directly made out of Sand/Mud is more valuable/divine/pure/sacred rather than the ones we pray which were made of Rock or Mercury. At first the Shivling is made mixing soil, cow dung, jaggery, bhasma etc. with the process of making the Shivling, Shiv Mantra is also chanted together it. Than other gods are worshipped together with the Shivling.
